Today's letter is probably going to be a bit shorter than normal, because we have a mission-wide Elders P-day today. Yes, that is the first time I have heard of it too! The zone leaders in a place called Ingleburn called President Back and got permission for it. So we have to get going sooner than normal. Should be pretty cool! We are having a touch rugby game, and a BBQ. It will be great to see some of my good missionary friends again! Especially Elder Winkelman and Elder Cocker, who will both be going home in like 3 weeks. Crazy!!
Earning the trust of the members
This week was a great one! It is always great in the service of our Lord. Monday night we had FHE with an awesome Tongan family, the L_'s. They are so cool! Elder Tai and I had a great opportunity to earn more trust of members when we arrived and there were no males home yet. They invited us in, but we couldn't. They said that we could just sit out front and wait, but we decided that we could use our time more effectively by knocking some doors in the area. So we knocked 2 doors, and both doors were positive contacts! It was awesome! 2 potential investigators at 2 doors. That is a great ratio. It was really cool.
What are some things that you like to catch missionaries doing that help you build trust in them?
(Parent note: male missionaries do not enter homes unless there is another male at least 16 years old present; likewise sister missionaries cannot enter homes unless there is another female of at least 16 years old home.)
Expecting... KFC
Elder Tai had a cool miracle during the mini missions. He and his comp Elder Walker were on foot (because we had the car) and they weren't having much success. Finally, it was time to head home, and they were going to the train station, and a woman came up and started talking to them. This woman isn't a member, but she told them that she has a brother on a mission, and all the rest of her family are members. She gave them her and her brothers' address and said come around! Cool, eh? Well, it gets better.
Elder Tai and I followed up this past week on Wednesday. We caught them at the right time! It was actually pretty funny. We found one of the brothers, whose name is C_, home and when we came knocking, he was so surprised! He told us later that he was expecting his sister to be coming home with KFC. He had the funniest look on his face! Hahahaha! He gathered his senses and quickly invited us in. Not 5 minutes later, his sister and sister-in-law came in. Hhahahahaha! He told us that he is a less-active member. He really has been wanting to get back into church. But because his records are not updated on the church records, he hasn't had contact with the church for nearly 1 year, when he and his brother (the one on a mission) attended the Samoan ward here in Bankstown.
Almost baptized as a teenager
So it is a miracle that we found him through his sister! Later, his sister came in and started talking with us as well. She expressed that she knows that our church has what she needs in her life. She was almost baptized as a teenager, but was put off. Now she really wants to be baptized, and to have the Restored Gospel be part of her life once more. Maybe we can help! Haha! Sooo cool! We were able to share a spiritual thought, and we have FHE (Family Home Evening) with the family tonight. Cool beans!
Nothing new with Z_ and J_, or N_. But we plan to see N_ tonight after FHE. Hopefully all goes well! We followed up with the Lebanese family and set up a time to come back this week. So hopefully we can have a good experience with them!
Interviews with President Back were great! President is figuring things out! He is theeeeee man! He knows how to build trust with missionaries by being a cool guy, while cracking down on things that need to change. He is doing a fantastic job.
Can kangaroos jump backwards?
'Can kangaroos jump backwards?' Well that is a great question. Next time I see one I'll ask!
'How does the educational system work?' The students go to school pretty much all year round. So the school year starts with the real year, they get like 2 weeks off for winter break (July), 2 weeks in-between quarters (April and October) and like 4 weeks during summer. It is different... The summer break is too short!
Oh! and Ezra, we actually live in things called flats. They are weird. What do you think my "flat" looks like?
I get to email Jens on his birthday! Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!
Man! That is soooooo cool to hear about Justin and Reilly! Sooo cool! I am proud of them! Brazil [for Justin]! Wow! That will be pretty neat! And Reilly in the same mission as Melanie! That is also pretty dang cool! Party in Mexico!
Elder Macfarlane is the man! He is one of our district leaders here. My district leader, technically. He came out the same time as me. Good missionary!
Whelp! Hope y'all have a fantabulous week! Next week I will hopefully have a lot of good stuff to say!
042!
Elder Larsen
